1. ‘K.L. Gilchrist’ isn’t a pen name. It’s more like a professional name, and it is short for Keisha Lavinia Gilchrist-Broomes. Since I regularly co-write and produce books for non-fiction authors, I chose a shortened version of my name to represent my fiction projects.
2. I love music more than anything else in the world. Unfortunately, God didn’t provide me with vocal skills or musical aptitude. However, dancing lets me enjoy music as much as I like. I teach soul line dance at senior centers in the Philadelphia area several times a month. (Note: My three favorite line dances are mentioned in the dance scenes in Thick Chicks.)
3. In my early twenties I honed my fiction writing skills by ghost writing stories for True Confessions magazines. It was fun, my editors were great to work with, and they paid me $125 for every published story. Just enough to take care of my expensive makeup habit.
4. I don’t act like a Christian while playing Bingo, UNO, or Monopoly. I repent often.
5. I originally wanted to name my youngest child, Jubilee. My husband vetoed the idea. I used this particular piece of family history in a short scene in Engaged.
